History

Whitefield was initially an Anglo-Indian settlement that initially comprised of 45 houses. The 3,900-acre land was granted to the European settlers by King Chamaraja Wodeyar X during the 1782’s. Mr. White (after whom the suburb is named), the president of European and Anglo-Indian association initially took a keen interest in the development of this area. With the help of Lord Connemara (the Governor of Madras), Mr. Wite helped in the initial advancement of this suburb.

During the 19th Century, the settlement grew as the Bangalore-Madras Railway line was built. This lead to a surge in the residentials in that area. Most of the residents were workers who worked in the KGF (Kolar Gold Fields) and their families.

Until the late 1990’s, Whitefield was majorly a small village. After the boom of Bengaluru’s IT sector during the late 90’s, Whitefield saw major changes in its infrastructure and residential buildings, especially during 2002. Since then, Whitefield has been expanding its infrastructure at a very fast pace, making it one of the most distinguished places to live in Bangalore.
